5 Types Of Psychology Degrees

Careers in clinical psychology require a doctorate degree plus a supervised internship and passage of state exams. Experimental research, industrial-organizational psychology, and engineering psychology are all examples of professions that tend to be more research-focused and less people-oriented. At the same time, a small share of U.S. adults report that they found a significant other through online dating platforms. Some 12% of adults say they have married or entered into a committed relationship with someone they first met through a dating site or app. These shifting realities have sparked a broader debate about the impact of online dating on romantic relationships in America.

In this role, you’d work directly with patients, usually those housed in psychiatric hospitals or mental health facilities. With a Master’s degree, you might be able to snag a position as a guidance counselor. In that role, you’d help students navigate their academic experience, plan for college, and figure out which career paths may be right for them. Along the way, you might also provide emotional support, helping students work through challenging situations. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t high-paying jobs with a Bachelor in psychology; they just may not be what you expect. After all, psychology majors often have exceptional people skills and tend to be excellent researchers.

Pluralities also believe that whether a couple met online or in person has little effect on the success of their relationship. Americans who have never used a dating site or app are particularly skeptical about the safety of online dating. Roughly half of adults who have never used a dating or app (52%) believe that these platforms are a not too or not Great site at all safe way to meet others, compared with 29% of those who have online dated. Some 53% of Americans overall agree that dating sites and apps are a very or somewhat safe way to meet people, while a somewhat smaller share (46%) believe these platforms are a not too or not at all safe way of meeting people. There are only modest differences between men and women in their use of dating sites or apps, while white, black or Hispanic adults all are equally likely to say they have ever used these platforms.

Doctoral graduates

Without empathy, it’s impossible for partners to understand each other. Forty-seven percent of singles say dating is harder today than it was 10 years ago. There is far less relational support and resources for adults with autism compared to their neurotypical partners. So, the next time you’re scrolling through potential dates, remember the importance of similarity. It’s not vain to date your mirror image when it’s backed by research. Dating apps increase the number of available romantic partners but it remains difficult to choose.

I realized how many human problems and achievements both came as a simple result of attitude and perseverance, and I wanted to understand how these came about from a scientific perspective. Naturally, given my new found love of Psychology and science in general, I wanted to become a professor. Fast forward five years and I chose a different path, but the application is the same. The beauty of a psychology degree is its wide breadth of application. Sure, if you’re interested in teaching others about the power and limitations of the human brain, you become a professor. But applying that power and understanding those limitations will help you navigate whichever career path you choose.

I’m helping one graduate student learn to do therapy and to assess patients. She helps me guide people through the research program on the computer. She analyzes data, and she’s learned to do statistics and how to design studies. At Meharry, I was in charge of an extensive and innovative program with an interdisciplinary staff.

I have been at UMass Lowell for 22 years, and my work has continued to evolve — both because community psychology is a diverse field and because academic positions provide great flexibility. In our applied community psychology master’s program, I help new professionals bridge theory with skills for promoting social justice. For almost 15 years, I have directed a Center for Women and Work, with an interdisciplinary group of scholars, and I have been able to partner with community members on numerous action projects.

And LGB adults are far more likely to have first met their partner online than straight adults (28% vs. 11%). Men – especially older men – and Republicans are more likely than women and Democrats to say it’s harder for men to know how to act when dating in the era of the #MeToo movement, though majorities across the board express this view. For example, 75% of men ages 50 and older say it is now harder for men to know how to behave on dates, compared with 63% of men younger than 50, 58% of women younger than 50 and 63% of women 50 and older.

Many researchers have assessed romantic couples across a variety of dimensions and found that couples that form lasting relationships often have marked similarities. The creators of online dating sites and apps have at times struggled with the perception that these sites could facilitate troubling – or even dangerous – encounters. And although there is some evidence that much of the stigma surrounding these sites has diminished over time, close to half of Americans still find the prospect of meeting someone through a dating site unsafe.
